Seagate DockStar network adapter, your personal online server
Today Seagate unveils its DockStar network adapter, an easy way to share media over your home network or the Internet. The adapter is simply a dock for the company's FreeAgent portable hard drives, but with an important twist, that being an Ethernet port. Once the adapter is connected to your home network, you can access files on it from anything connected — even over the Web.
Got a video at home that you need to share at work? Just log into the browser interface and copy it right over. Better still, just share it — the adapter will let you share specific folders on the drive; your other content stays locked up.
We've been playing with the DockStar network adapter the past couple of days, and the setup is one of the easiest we've seen. Copying over an HD video file took only seconds, and access to the drive is seamless through the Web interface. But the $100 price tag (plus $30/year for the service, first year free) is a tad steep for a mere dock — no hard disk is included — especially when there are tons of free cloud-computing services out there that do pretty much the same thing.
Is there a benefit, though, to having all your media in one place, and solely in your control? Maybe, but I'm not that paranoid.
