LaCie teams up with Philippe Starck on external hard drives

Hard drive maker LaCie on Tuesday introduced two new external hard drives that were designed by Phillippe Starck. Both sport a sculptured magma motif from the world-famous designer, which is touch-sensitive in the Starck Desktop. This drive is covered by a 3mm aluminum shell, and has Starck's signature orange LED that indicates the drive's status. The touch interface is customizable, allowing users to open certain applications depending on how long they stay in contact with the touch surface.

The desktop drive connects to Macs and Windows PCs through USB but, like most larger drives, needs an external power supply. It comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities with an automatic backup feature.
The Starck Mobile has a built-in retractable USB cable and uses little enough power to go without an external power supply. It's similarly multi-platform, and allows users to set up automatic backups in its 320GB and 500GB capacities.
The 1TB desktop Starck drive costs $130, while the 2TB model costs $250. The portable model in a 320GB capacity costs $100, while the 500GB model is priced at $140.
